Pebble toys are hand made by fair trade co-operatives in Bangladesh. Pebble was set up by Samantha Morshed in 2010 when she moved to Bangladesh with her family. Determined to do something about the poverty she saw in Dhaka she wanted to create jobs in beautiful rural Bangladesh so that people were not forced to leave their homes and children to seek employment in the city.
She has been so successful that Pebble now employs over 6000 women across Bangladesh. The jobs are all flexible reflecting the rural lifestyle of life outside Dhaka, and allowing workers to fit paid jobs in with their farms and existing domestic arrangements. It is also very sociable work with everyone congregating in the centre of the village to crochet.
People buy Pebble toys because they are gorgeous but its nice to know that they also help keep families together and give children a better life.
